- Have goals ready.
- Use school website and internet to identify possible scholarships.
- Build a portfolio of what scholarships you want to apply for.
- Start Locally- Do not ignore small or local scholarships. They can sometimes be the easiest to win because there are fewer applicants.
- Consider smaller awards. Even the smaller scholarships that you receive add up. These scholarships can cover cost of books, transportation, room and board, etc.
- Focus on your interests. Apply for scholarships that interest you and if it involves an essay, it is often something that you can write about that relates to your interests.
- Submit your best work and save it because you may be able to use it in another scholarship application.
- Remember, More Work=Less Applicants- Most students do not want to do a scholarship if it involves a lot of work, so your chances of getting these scholarships are higher.
- Make sure you submit your applications exactly as they ask you to do. Have someone proofread your entire application before submitting. (English teacher or Counselor works well because they are familiar with process.)
- Have a resume available with all academic, professional, personal and community related accomplishment before applying for scholarships.
- Have your recommendation letters in place before applying for scholarships.
